PT-76 (Plavayushchiy Tank-76) is a Soviet amphibious tank. It was accepted into service in 1951. During its serial production, from 1951 to 1967, it was repeatedly modernized. A total of 3,039 PT-76s were produced, as well as a number of vehicles based on it. The tank was in service with the Soviet Army, but was subsequently mostly replaced by the BMP-1. Nevertheless, up to 100 tanks of this type were in service with the Armed Forces of Russia as of 2004. About 2,000 PT-76s were exported to a number of countries, some of which used it as the basis for the production of their own modernized versions. The PT-76 was widely used in a number of armed conflicts, including the Vietnam War, the Arab-Israeli conflicts in 1967 and 1973, the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, the Yugoslav War of 1991-1995, and occasionally during military operations in Chechnya.
